Mary Kathryn Townsend, 75, of Lapeer passed away Saturday May 6, 2017. She was born in October of 1941, in Flint, to parents Arthur D. Williams and Blanche L. Harbron. She was a 1959 graduate of Lapeer High School and a 1964 graduate of Eastern Michigan University.
On June 13, 1964, Mary Kay married Bill Townsend in Lapeer. Mary Kay taught Business Education classes for four years at Walled Lake High School and for 25 years at Lapeer West High School, where she was also Department Chair a number of years.
After retirement, Mary Kay enjoyed quilting and researching family history for her own family and for the Lapeer County Genealogical Society (LCGS)...of which she was a charter member. She compiled family histories and submitted various articles for publication in Michigan, Montana, Ohio, and Ontario. While a member of LCGS, she held several offices, helped compile several publications, and enjoyed volunteering at the Research Center in the Lapeer County Historical Museum. She was also a member of the LCHS.
Surviving are husband, Bill of Lapeer; daughters Julie Townsend of Laingsburg; Elizabeth (Michael) Spranger of Brighton; grandchildren, Laura and Matthew Spranger of Brighton; brother-in-law, DuWayne Hammill of Lapeer; sister and brother-in-law, Wes (Denise) Joneson of Custer; niece, Amy Joneson of Scottville; nephew, Justin Hammill of Brighton, great niece, Elizabeth Joneson-Whitsell of Scottville and several cousins. .
Mary Kay was predeceased by her sister-in-law, Geraldine Hammill in 2009 and her parents.
Visitation will be 2–4 and 6–8 Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at Muir Brothers Funeral Home, Lapeer. Mary Kay's funeral service will be 11:00AM Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at the funeral home, officiated by her dear friend, Mike Schlusler. Burial will follow in Stiles Cemetery, Lapeer.
