Joseph Christian Schmitt JR. of Grand Blanc, Michigan died peacefully April 4, 2017.
Born December 12, 1931 in Grand Rapids Michigan to Joseph Schmitt Sr. and Donna (Johnson) Schmitt, Joe graduated from Grand Rapids Catholic Central 1949 and continued his education at Aquinas College where he played baseball.
While in Grand Rapids, Joe worked at Haviland Products, RC Allen Business Machines, and Grand Rapids Gypsum. Joe formed Mid America Management Corporation in 1975 in Flint, Michigan and excelled at managing property for his clients. At Its peak, he managed over 10,000 apartment units, numerous condominiums and commercial real estate properties.
He loved to help other people start businesses and participated in many of their operations either as consultant or partner. His personal involvement in several businesses continued even while recently hospitalized.
Sports were a big part of his life starting in school where he played on numerous athletic teams and continued throughout his life by playing and attending countless sporting events. Joe served as Basketball coach and Athletic Director at Holy Spirit School, was a member of the West Michigan Officials Assoc. and the Michigan High School Athletic Assoc. Notre Dame and University of Michigan were his favorite teams to attend or watch ball games. After sports, attending movies and playing craps at Casinos were favorite pastimes. He was a longtime member of Warwick Hills Country Club.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Gertrude (Trudy), sons: Joseph (Cathy) Schmitt III, James (Janice) Schmitt, Richard (Joni) Schmitt, John (Debora) Schmitt, daughters: Julie Schmitt, Susan (Dr. Dennis) Dunning, Margaret (Roger) Ackerman and step-daughter Justine (Dr. Christopher) Herzog, grandchildren: Melisa, Rhiannon, Joey, Jimmy, John Richard, TJ, Erin, Sean, Jason, Valerie, Michael, Tom, Amy, Kara, Emily, Mark, Robin, David, Maria, Brett, Samantha, Erin, Christian, Katy, Roger, and Murphy, step grandchildren: Leo, Max and Marie and 34 great-grandchildren, sisters in law Barb (Beth) Gleason and Patricia (Lee) Burris.
He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Donna Schmitt, Brother Lawrence (Max) Schmitt, daughter Mary Tornga, and mother of his children Virginia Schmitt.
Visitation will be held Sunday April 9, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at Arsulowicz Brothers Remembrance Chapel 3525 Remembrance Rd. NW, Walker, Michigan 49534 where the Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 PM.
The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 2230 Lake Michigan Dr. NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan 49504 on Monday April 10 at 11:00 AM where he will repose one hour prior to the Mass. In lieu of Flowers the family would like donations to St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church Capitol Campaign or Catholic Central Boosters.
