Duane James Sholler, Age 89, went to be with his Lord on Wednesday, November 17, 2011 at Oliver Woods Retirement Village, Owosso, MI.
Duane was born on March 14, 1922 to Louis and Margaret (Smith) Sholler in Maple Grove Township. He married Catherine A. Kettler on July 14, 1943. She predeceased him on March 26, 2011. He is survived by two daughters: Ruth (Donald) Volz of Mt. Pleasant; Sue (David) Lea of Owosso. Four grandchildren: Hannah (Daniel) Winn of Aurora, CO; Micah (Amanda) Volz of Marysville, MI; Catherine (Corey Grice) Lea of Toledo, OH; William (Mara) Lea of Evanston, IL. His first great- grandson is due in January of 2012.

Duane graduated from Montrose High School in 1939 and attended General Motors Institute in Flint. He worked for a short time at the Montrose State Bank and Armor & Company before enlisting in the U.S. Coast Guard. Duane was stationed in several locations around the Great Lakes during WWII including the Toledo Harbor Lighthouse. He was stationed at Atlantic City, N.J. at the end of the war. After returning to Montrose, Duane worked at Chevrolet Flint Manufacturing for 35 years. He retired in 1980 as supervisor of Office Services for the Main Office. In his retirement, he was a salesman for Marsh Monuments. Duane was a member of the Montrose United Methodist Church for 73 years where he directed the chancel choir for 35 years. He also taught Sunday school, was a member of the Mature Young People's Group and United Methodist Men. Duane served several years as secretary for the Board of Education for Montrose Community Schools. He was a member of the Harry Baker Post #367 of the American Legion in Montrose and the Montrose Area Historical Association. Duane also sang with the Norton Male Chorus for several years. He was an avid Montrose Hill-McCloy High School football and Detroit Tigers fan. Duane loved to be with his family and attend all the musical, school and church events his children and grandchildren were participating in.

Besides his wife, Catherine, he was predeceased by his parents; an infant daughter (Diane Kay); and two sisters: Eva Johnston and Jane Moor.

A memorial service will be held at the Montrose United Methodist Church on Monday, November 21, 2011 at 11AM. Rev. Wayne Ferrigan officiating. Visitation will be on Saturday from 2-4 and 6-8 and Monday from 10 AM until time of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to the following: Montrose United Methodist Church, Memorial Healthcare Hospice, Montrose American Legion Post #367 or The Montrose Area Historical Association.
