Of Grand Blanc, age 88 died Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, surrounded by her children.
Alvina (Liz) was born in Wolford, North Dakota on December 15, 1930, the fourth child of seven to Mary Eva (Lauinger) and Martin Schmaltz.
In 1948, Liz attended St. Michael’s School of Nursing in Grand Forks, N.D. and worked as a registered nurse for many years. On June 11, 1957, she married James Walker and settled in Grand Blanc where she raised her seven children. Liz did not limit her love to only her children, she nurtured countless others who walked through her door. Her family and her friends were always her true joy. Her
strength, generosity, and undying commitment to her family will never be forgotten.
Surviving are her 7 children, Pegi and Rick Rogers of Hobe Sound, FL, Jill and Jamie Campbell of Grand Blanc, Rob and Diane Walker of Indianapolis, IN, Jimmy and Terri Walker of Grand Blanc, Tom and Tracy Walker of Nazareth, PA, Lori and Steve Sheppard of Grand Blanc, and Jeff and Elizabeth Walker of Carmel, IN; “Sons” Carl and Marcia Snyder, Jim and Marleine McLeod (Elias, John, and Michael), and Jim Mason; her beloved 21 grandchildren, Sean, Eric and Andrea, Christopher, Katy, Blake, Sarah, Mitchell, Annie, JD, Isabelle, Nick, Andrew, Matthew, Molly, Ellie, Sophie, Michael, Alex, Elena, David, and Brian; her siblings, Katherine Reid, Alice Swenson, Lorna and Ken Gibbard, Lloyd and Judy Schmaltz, Richard and Pam Schmaltz, and Viola Roach, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Jim in 2009, and her sister Marie Roller in 1983.
The Walker family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Sean Giblin and staff for their wonderful care over the years and to the entire ICU staff at Henry Ford Hospital for their compassion and excellent care our mother received during her stay.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10:30 am Wednesday, May 1, 2019, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Father Bill Wegher officiating.
Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Wreaths Across America for Great Lakes National Cemetery or St. Joseph’s Food Pantry at Holy Family Church.
Visitation 4-8pm Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Rosary will be prayed 7pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Visitation 9:30 am Wednesday at the church until the time of the Mass.
