ZELLAR, LEWIS “LOUIE”

Age 85, “going on 86”, of Flint, MI, passed away on March 14, 2025. Louie passed away at Hurley Medical Center with family by his side.

Funeral service will be held 2pm Saturday, April 19, 2025, at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Pastor Dennis Gibbs officiating.

Visitation 2-8pm Friday, April 18, 2025, and 10am Saturday, April 19, 2025, until the time of the service at the funeral home.

Service and burial in May, 2025 at Germfask Cemetery in Germfask, Michigan.

Louie was born at Gronlands Resort, Lakefield Township and grew up in Germfask, MI.

In 1961 he met his wife Rose and shortly after got married in 1962. In 1964 Louie and family moved to Pontiac, then later settled in Flint in 1968.

Louie worked in Pontiac for Parragon Steel as a steel worker until 1967 when Louie started Zellars Custom Crushing processing road gravel in Waterford and Millington. In 1976 he started working in the Genesee County area for CJ Rogers as a dozer operator, specializing in fine grading. He then began subcontracting to many local general contractors as “Zellar and Sons Excavating”. Louie’s oldest son Greg graduated high school in 1981 and together Louie and Greg grew the company to the formation of L. Zellar & Sons Excavating, Inc. which is still operating today.

Louie was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 324, receiving his 60 year member award in 2022.

Louie enjoyed the outdoors. He went on a halibut fishing trip and caribou hunt in Alaska with Quint, and many other hunting/fishing trips around the country and Canada. Louie and Rose spent many Saturday nights dancing at the Germfask Township Hall in their younger days. Louie is famous for his “honey pot” story.

Louie was an avid car man and took his 1966 GTO to local car shows and won multiple first place prizes.

Louie enjoyed driving in the Flint Back to the Bricks Car Show.

Louie is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Rose (Grawey) Zellar; sons, Greg (Donna) Zellar, Quint (Emily) Zellar and Derick (Amber) Zellar; grandchildren, Brittanie Martin, Courtney (Chris) Walters, Tyler (Shelby) Zellar, Parker (Sara) Zellar, Liam (Anna) Zellar, Aidan Zellar and Abby Zellar; great-grandchildren Jack Martin, Gerritt and Graesyn Walters, Everleigh and Addisyn Zellar, Ashlynn and Forrest Zellar; brothers John Jr., twin, Lawrence, Stan and Steve; sisters, Ceil Nyman and Laurie Tansy; along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by parents, John and Hilda (Goldthorpe) Zellar; brothers, Ken and Wayne; sisters, Pauline Schultz and May Armstrong and sister-in-law, JoAnne Zellar.
