MISHINA, Frank – Of Davison, age 79, died Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at Caretel Inns of Linden after a long struggle with diabetes.
Visitation 4-8 p.m. Thursday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. A Scripture Service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Mishina will be at the church for viewing from 11:30 a.m. Friday until the time of the Mass. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Friday, July 1, 2011 at
St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 North Dayton Street, Davison, Father Andrew A. Czajkowski officiating. Cremation will take place following the Mass. Those desiring may make contributions to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison. Mr. Mishina was born in Eva Beach, Hawaii on June 20, 1932, son of the late Hirozo and Rin Mishina. At 9 years old, Frank witnessed the bombing of Pearl Harbor. At the age of 19, Frank joined the United States Air Force. He served for 4 years and was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. In 1960 Frank received his Bachelors Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii and began teaching at Waipahu High School where he himself graduated from. Frank received a teacher scholarship from the East/West Center at the University of Hawaii where he met his future wife, Pat. This scholarship included a 6 week tour of Japan and full tuition. He earned his Master’s Degree in Asian Studies there in 1966. In 1967, Frank left for Michigan and married Florence (Pat) Bednarski on July 1, 1967. Frank taught Social Studies at Northwestern High School for 28 years, U.S. History at the University of Michigan-Flint for 23 years and Japanese Language at Mott Community College for 5 years without missing a single day of work! Frank was a lifelong learner as he continued to attend college courses as a student for many years. He enjoyed watching all sporting events, doing Sudoku and crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed sharing his knowledge, stories and memories with every person he met. Frank will be deeply missed by many. Surviving are wife of 43 years, Florence (Pat) Mishina; Brothers, Roy and Thomas Mishina of Hawaii; Several very close nieces and nephews and their extended families. Frank was preceded in death by brothers, George, Toshi, Ken and Hiroshi, sisters, Lillian and Mildred, all of Hawaii. Your condolences may be shared with the family at swartzfuneralhomeinc.com.
