Jakeway, William Thomas of Flushing, age 88, died Tuesday, November 26, 2019, at Durand Senior Care. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2019, at St. Robert Catholic Church. Bill was born on February 11, 1931, the son of Earl and Zita (Gonyea) Jakeway. He graduated from Flint Northern High School, Class of 1949, where he played football, basketball and baseball. He was a member of the undefeated 1948, Flint Northern football team. Bill was a member of St. Robert Catholic Church, where he served on the Parish Council for several years. As a former City Council Member and former Mayor of Flushing, he overwhelmingly survived the first ever recall election in 1985.
Bill was a family man first and last. His family meant everything to him, and his greatest joy came from visiting with and watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports. Outside of his family, his greatest joy was his cottage overlooking beautiful Crystal Lake in Beulah where he would sit for hours admiring the beauty of Crystal Lake from his deck.
Bill is survived by his children, Diane (Rich) Timblin, William Jakeway II, Robert (Michelle) Jakeway, Jeffrey (Bonnie) Jakeway, Greg Jakeway; grandchildren, Matthew Jakeway, Jaclyn Jakeway, Jaime Granger, Audrey Jakeway, Jackson Jakeway, Jordan Jakeway, Jenna Castle, Sara Jakeway, Bevin Hernandez, Aiden Timblin, and Katherine Jakeway. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bonnie Ames Jakeway; brothers, Edwin and John Jakeway; and sisters, June Topolinski, Norma Behan, and Phyllis Miller.
The family would like to extend to the wonderful people at Durand Senior Care & Rehabilitation and Heart to Heart Hospice a special heartfelt thank you for the care our father received over the last three years while he courageously fought his battle with dementia. In particular, we want to extend a special thank you to Casey, Lila, and Amy for their care during our fathers last day and to Stacey, Megan, Katie, Kevin, Winter, Val, Taylor, Sheryl and many others who cared for our father in his time of need.
