Fesmire, Walker, PhD, of Flushing, age 86, passed away on Monday, March 14, 2016, at Heritage Manor. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Flushing Presbyterian Church. Rev. Teresa Peterson will officiate. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Saturday at the church until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers and gifts, the Fesmire Family would appreciate donations be made to the Dr. Walker E. Fesmire Accounting Scholarship at the University of Michigan-Flint. This scholarship was started in his name by a group of former students to honor their beloved professor.
Walker was born in Milford, Ohio on July 12, 1929, the son of Jesse and Bernice (Jones) Fesmire. Walker married his wife of 56 years Chieko “Peggy” Ito of Hiroshima, Japan on January 7, 1955. They met while Walker was serving in the U.S. Army in Signals Intelligence and Chieko was a Japanese national employed by the same U.S. Army unit during the Korean Conflict. Chieko preceded him in death on May 30, 2011.
Walker was a Professor Emeritus of Accounting at the University of Michigan-Flint, serving the UM-F community from 1982 until his retirement in 1997. He received his Bachelors degree from Ohio State University, his Masters degree from Xavier University and his PhD from the University of Mississippi. Walker served as President of the Faculty Senate, was the founding faculty advisor for the Al Beta Alpha Psi, a national professional accounting fraternity. During his 36 year teaching career, he also taught at Valparaiso, Northern Illinois, Ferris State, Bradley, Northern and Eastern Michigan Universities. Walker was also a visiting professor for a year at Deakin University in Geelong, Victoria, Australia in 1991.
He was an active member of Flushing Presbyterian Church, The Flushing SALT (Seniors and Law Enforcement Together), the VITA volunteer tax assistance program, Kiwanis, the Flushing Area Blood Drive, the City of Flushing Planning Commission and received great pleasure in his role of Teachers Aide for several years at Central Elementary after his retirement from UM-F. Walker was a high school football, basketball, and baseball letter man and coached both of his sons youth sports teams.
Walker is survived by his sons, Roy and wife Mary Fesmire of Lockport, IL, Warren Fesmire of Flint; grandchildren, Kyle, Kitty, Kristin and Erin; nieces, Karyn of San Diego, Rosie of Cincinnati; and nephew, Dennis of San Diego.
The Fesmire family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Manor for their excellent care provided to Walker during his final days. |
