James Benedict Grimes

A loving husband and father, age 71 of Owosso entered into eternal life on Monday, April 27, 2015 at Memorial Healthcare.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am Saturday May 2, at St. Paul's Catholic Church with Father Michael O'Brien officiating. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home from 2pm to 8pm both Thursday and Friday. A rosary will be prayed Friday at 7pm. Burial will be at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Flint.

James was born January 25, 1944 in Flint, the son of Benedict and Elizabeth (Marzonie) Grimes.

He graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic High School in 1961 as a three sport all-star athlete. After turning down a West Point Scholarship, he received a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Masters in Bank Management from the University of Michigan.

He married Anita Richetta at St. Luke's Catholic Church in Flint on June 26, 1970.

He began his working career with Ernst and Ernst Accounting in Saginaw, moving to Owosso in 1970 to establish an Ernst and Ernst office. From there, he moved into an Assistant Controller position with Midland-Ross Corporation. Later, he worked as Vice President and Controller for Owosso Savings Bank through their transition with Pacesetter and Old Kent. He joined Robert Vogl in 1984 forming Vogl and Grimes CPA’s until his retirement in 2007.

Jim loved the University of Michigan. He was a member of the Victor's Club, The University of Michigan President's Club, a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and served as treasurer of U of M Club of Owosso. He was a U of M football season ticket holder for over 50 years. Jim enjoyed nothing more than spending his fall Saturdays with his family at the Big House. He loved to golf and was a member of the Owosso Country Club for 45 years and was also a member of the Johnny Walker Hole-In-One Club. He was a three time O.C.C. Invitational Green Jacket Champion and a past President's Cup Champion. Jim enjoyed his winters in Sarasota, Florida golfing at Misty Creek Golf Club and fishing and boating as a member of the Freedom Boat Club.

Jim was a member of the Accounting Research Association, National Association of Accountants, American Institute of CPA’s, the Michigan Association of CPS’s and Institute of Management Accountants. He belonged to many civic organizations including the Exchange Club, the Owosso Hunt Club, The Elks and the Sons of Italy. He sat on the Board of Directors at Memorial Hospital, the Shiawassee County Chamber of Commerce, Devries Nature Conservatory and the Humane Society. He also served as Chairman of the Shiawassee United Way. He was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Jim served his country in the United States Army from 1966 until his honorable discharge in 1972.
James is survived by his wife Anita; children Anthony James, Michael James, Gina Marisa (Vincent) Paglio, and Angela Marisa, all of Chicago; sisters Barbara (Duke) Fillmore of Au Train, Dianne Lewis of Flint; nieces Kathy (Jerry) Goodrich of Genesee and AnnMarie Fillmore of Irving, Texas; grand nephew Carson Goodrich; and sister-in-law Diane Richetta of Owosso.
He was predeceased by his parents, father and mother-in-law Antonio and Mary Richetta; brother-in-law Charles Lewis and niece Sheryl Lewis.

Because of Jim's many interests and places of service, memorial contributions may be decided by the donor.
