WESTERMAN, Darlene Rogers – of Clio, age 77, died Sunday, December 18, 2016 at her residence after battling cancer for seven months, with her only son at her side. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday, December 22, 2016 at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio. Pastor Cindy Dewar officiating. Cremation to follow. Final inurnment will be in Flint Memorial Park at a later date. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1-8PM and on Thursday from 12PM until time of services at 1 PM. Contributions may be made to the family to establish a Darlene Rogers Westerman Foundation to help people with cancer care and research.
Darlene was born June 28, 1939, in Flint to the late Charles and Olive (Hawks) Jacob and lived in Mt. Morris most of her life moving to Clio in 1996. She married Xaviar "Rex" L. Rogers on August 16, 1958. He preceded her in death on June 1, 1993. She then married Richard Westerman on April 14, 1996. He preceded her in death on June 1, 2015. She was a member of Clio Community of Christ Church (formerly Reorganized Church of Latter Day Saints.) Darlene worked at Slattery Drug Store then Mt. Morris High School as a secretary then bus driver before she was pregnant with her first daughter, Melanie, who died at 2 days of age. Darlene was involved with the community and worked with several Mayors. She was one-time hostess during the mayor's campaign. She served on the Mt. Morris Communications Council Board in the 1960's and on the committee of the Mt. Morris Area Centennial 100 year Anniversary in 1967. She assisted her first husband, Rex when he served as President of PTHO in the 1970's. Darlene also served on the committee and Chairperson of the Mt. Morris Beautification in the 1980's. She volunteered for the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life for many years. She was a member of the Cooley Family Association of America which she was a direct descendant of the famed Dr. Samuel Cooley of Connecticut. Her name was recently added to the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. She had a gift of making people feel good about themselves. She was a very generous and kind person. Darlene was also a member of the Red Hat Society and loved to travel.
Surviving are: Son, Rex Todd Rogers; Step Daughter, Robin Westerman; Doris Cruz who was like a daughter to her; Sisters-in-law, Phyllis Jacob and Harriet Jacob; many special nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by Brothers: Gerald, Everett and Harley "Jake" Jacob; and a Sister, Weltha Willey. The family extends a special thanks to Heartland Hospice, Carrie her RN, Lisa her aide and her niece Mary Willey Forsythe for all of their love and care.
