WHITE, Gerald Deward -- Age 80, of Flint died January 25, 2018. Arrangements provided by Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Road Swartz Creek. Gerald was born July 9, 1937 in Flint, the third child of Deward and Hazel ( Rockefeller) White. His sister, Evelyn, had requested a brother from a catalogue. Deward and Hazel’s first child, Leona died when she was 2 years old. The house he lived in was a product of many years of construction by the family. Home was a good place to learn. As an adolescent, Gerald was very active in school activities at Beecher High School. His favorite venues were membership in the Hi-Y Club, parts in all the class plays, and business manager of the yearbook. He worked part time at a grocery store where he met new friends and the real world of work. This job provided spending money and a small sum for college. College attendance was at Flint Junior College and The University of Michigan-Flint. Later he received a Masters Degree and a Certification as a counselor.
Jo Ann and Gerald were married in 1960. Their first child, Deanna was born in 1964. Gerald taught for several years at the Westwood Heights Schools. He left the education field for several years, later he returned to complete an education career of 34 years. David, his son, was adopted in 1973. His youngest daughter, Emily, was born in 1978. One of Gerald proudest moments was assisting his 3 children to become college graduates. This continues the path started by Gerald when he was the first college graduate on either side of the family. Gerald's proudest career accomplishments included teaching across many subject areas and grade levels. This allowed for many positive interactions with students along many avenues of education and personal growth. Gerald was very active in the professional matters of teachers. Through his efforts, the statues and recognition of fellow teachers was enhanced. In 1978, Gerald's interest in nature was expanded by the purchase of 75 acres of wooded property. This resulted in many pleasant experiences and much satisfaction from implamenting forest management practices. He had a favorite expression for "his woods". "The forest is where you find the other you." Gerald is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jo Ann of Flint; daughter, Deanna (Don) Korth of Flint; son, David (Aimee) White of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Emily White of Atlanta, GA; granddaughter Skylar White of Phoenix, AZ; nieces and nephew, and best friend Willard McNew. He was preceded in
death by his sister Evelyn March. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice House of Shiawassee County. Tributes may be shared on the obituaries page of www.sharpfuneralhomes.com.
