Bill was born on October 13, 1939 in Flint, MI to the late Ernest and Rita (Hughes) Gardner. He graduated from St. Michael’s Catholic School. Bill served his country in the United States Navy and Naval Reserves. He married Patricia Dudek on June 25, 1971 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Flint, MI. He worked for the Flint Fire Department where he later retired in 1989 as Captain. Bill enjoyed working on his laser machine, crushing pennies, volunteering for the Genesee County Humane Society walking the dogs. One of his greatest passions was his mission trips to places including Haiti, Honduras, Belize, Mexico, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and to the Appalachian region. Bill also sailed the Atlantic on a cargo freighter. He sailed the tall ships and loved to crew on them. He attended many naval reunions. Bill also enjoyed family history and old photographs of his family and of the City of Flint. He “enjoyed” never throwing anything away. Bill was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Mid-Michigan Antique Machinery Association, and was an adult server at St. Robert Catholic Church. His wife, Patricia; three children, Amy, Joel, and Michael (his wife Jamie); and his grandchildren, Foster and Abby; and his dog, Cooper are saddened by his sudden departure from their lives. “We know in our hearts he is embarking on this…his greatest adventure.” Those also left behind to cherish his memory are his brother, Dennis; two sisters, Janet and Christine; and his “favorite” mother-in-law Mildred, age 102; and many other family members and friends. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Genesee County Humane Society, Right to Life, Hand in Hand Ministries, or the Salvation Army.
