MASSAR, James – Of Grand Blanc, age 88, died Monday, December 17, 2012 at his residence.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2012 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Father Jonathan Perrotta officiating.

Burial in New Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation 1-8 p.m. Wednesday and 12-8 p.m. Thursday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Massar will be at the church from 10 a.m. Friday until the time of the Funeral Mass.

James was born Flint, Michigan on September 14, 1924 and was a resident of the Flint area all of his life.

He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1942.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII.

He played Minor League Baseball for (5) years in Brooklyn Dodger Organization. He officiated High School Basketball for 43 years; Football for 27 years and worked State Finals 1954-55.

James received the "Vern L. Norris Award for Outstanding Contributions to Sports Officiating"-MHSAA, April 1995.

He served as Clinician/Interpreter of Basketball Rules, various Associations and Leagues.

Jim was instrumental in creating "Code of Ethics" for Coaches and Officials-Genesee County. He was a recipient of the first "Jim Massar Service Award" from Genesee County Coaches and Officials Association.

Mr. Massar worked 35 years at AC Spark Plug.

He was Past President and a Board of Director member of the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame for more than 28 years. The GFASHOF Team Room at Genesys was renamed in 2011, "Jim Massar Team Room". He was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame 2012.

Surviving are four daughters, Debra (John) Goyette,
Dianne (Tom) Kudza,
Denise (Dale) Keipert
and Darlene (Bob) Gaydos;

longtime companion, Jane Workman;

11 grandchildren and
5 great-grandchildren;
sisters, Mary Schifano and Anna Turgeon.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Shirley (Petrill).
