LaVerne Ann McCombs

Born: 1/17/1945
Died: 10/22/2024
Age: 79
Community: Flint Elks Lodge 222 Grand Blanc, MI

LaVerne Ann McCombs (nèe Axelson) was born on January 17, 1945 to the late Oscar Verner and Margaret (nèe McClymont) Axelson, in Highland Park, MI. She was the younger sister of Elizabeth Axelson. The family moved early on to the Upper Peninsula, where LaVerne attended Menominee schools and graduated from Menominee High School in 1963.

After high school, LaVerne attended Wayne State nursing school. There she met and married the late Thomas McCombs. The next few years were spent growing their family with three children. Returning to school, LaVerne shifted her focus to social work. She finished her undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan-Flint, and then went on to earn a master’s degree in social work from the University of Michigan in 1981. LaVerne dearly loved Ann Arbor and her experiences there formed a lifelong devotion to Michigan football.

In 1981 LaVerne began work at Bay Valley Hospice and continued to develop that program as the administrator for several decades under the banners of Bay Valley through Genesys Hospice. In 1997 she oversaw the opening of the Genesys Care Center, an inpatient hospice facility in Goodrich. Through these years, LaVerne sat on the National Hospice board, as well as the Michigan Hospice and Palliative Care board, and was a great pioneer and champion of the hospice movement. Beginning in 1986, LaVerne took up the mantle of lecturer at the University of Michigan-Flint. She taught decades of classes in Aging, Death and Dying and Intro to Social Work. She was very proud to be a well-loved teacher and adored her students. Even after retiring from hospice, LaVerne continued to teach classes and enjoy the university atmosphere until weeks before her death.

LaVerne was never one to sit still. She loved to travel, spend time with grandchildren, catch up with friends, go to live music events (particularly anything Motown), and of course, cheer on her Michigan Wolverines. She leaves behind her three children, Patrick (Wendy) McCombs, Sara (Richard) Hoyle, and Lisa McCombs; as well as her grandchildren Patrick (Lauren) & Max McCombs, and Miles, Elliot & Rory Hoyle, who will always remember an engaged and enthusiastic grandmother. LaVerne also leaves behind her sister Betty, several nieces and nephews, and many beloved friends and neighbors.
