SMITH, Sally Ann (Rivett) – of Flint, age 74, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family to be with her Lord and Savior on September 8, 2016. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 5073 Daly Blvd., Flint; Pastor Gary L. Beck officiating. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 12-3 & 5-8 PM Sunday and 1-3 & 5-8 PM Monday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. There will be one hour of visitation prior to the service on Tuesday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Mark Lutheran Church Worker Scholarship Fund.
Sally was born in Flint, MI on August 28, 1942. She graduated Kearsley High School in 1960. Sally graduated from Mott Junior College and went on to attend the University of Michigan-Flint to become a high school English teacher. Sally was joined in marriage to Darryl Smith on August 15, 1964 at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Flint, MI. They were married 52 years and raised four beautiful children. Sally was an extremely bright and talented woman who had a seemingly unquenchable thirst for knowledge, reading, learning and volunteering. As a student she campaigned for John F. Kennedy and continued to be actively involved in her love of politics. She was a past member of Flint Junior Women’s League. She was a speaker for LWML for 40 years. She began the Kearsley High School Service Learning Program. The Sally Smith Service Learning Award is given in her honor each year. At an early age she professed her faith in Jesus Christ. Her Christian life was as beautiful as the grandchildren she loved so well and her influence will forever remain in the lives of all who knew her. Known for her contagious smile, ease and frequent conversation with even complete strangers, who even now are being changed by her witness of constant love and faith in God. Her strong witness of her Lord and Savior will never be forgotten, Her Christian example was tireless. She served her Lord in many leadership capacities at St. Mark Lutheran some of which include, Superintendent of Sunday School and Wednesday Night School, Chairman of the Ladies Guild, member of the choir, Chairman of the Altar Guild, leader of Hearts and Hands ministry, Adult Bible Study leader, strong supporter and volunteer of St. Mark Lutheran School.
Sally is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Darryl; son, Scott Smith of Metamora; daughters, Denise (J.T.) Erdmann of Indianapolis, Michelle (Steve) Scheer of Houston, Susan Kirchhoff of Sterling Heights; grandchildren, Gretchen and Thomas Erdmann, Darryl and Jonathan Scheer, Brennan, Jordan and Lillian Kirchhoff. She was preceded in death by her mother, Pearl Rivett and granddaughter, Jacqueline Ruth Kirchhoff.
