Gerald was born in Wahjamego, Michigan on November 5, 1923, the son of the late Fred and Marguerite (Conner) Starkey. During World War II, Gerry enlisted in the United States Navy and was assigned to Company E of the Sea Bees. He served in both the European and South Pacific Theatres. On May 26, 1951, Gerry married Carol Rice in her home parish, St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bay City, where they raised and educated 3 children; Ann, Jim and Yvonne. In 1978, Gerry’s job transferred to Holland, Michigan. The couple gained many dear friends during their 18 years on the western side of the state and were members of St. Frances de Sales Parish. Gerry was a resident of Flint for the past 22 years and a member of St. John Vianney Parish. Gerry and Carol were married nearly 66 years when she passed away on April 12, 2017. Gerry was the family photographer, an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge. He enjoyed watching PBS and the Golf Channel. His guilty pleasure was Dr. Phil. Gerry was known for his sense of humor; a gift he’s passed on to all of his kids and grandkids. He was an active volunteer in every Parish he belonged to and he and Carol epitomized the corporal acts of mercy.
