Mart was born in Flint, MI on May 18, 1930 during the great depression, to the late Roy and Eva (Ostrander) Madden. He was the fifth child born that would eventually total 10 children. Mart grew up in Elba and loved spending his childhood at Potters Lake. He graduated from Davison High School in 1948. Mart served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army. Upon returning home he used the GI Bill to attend Flint Institute of Barbering. Mart married his high school sweetheart, Jane Marie Drake on September 12, 1953 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison. He would always refer to her as “His Bride.” They raised their five children in Davison and enjoyed a wonderful life together until her death on February 23, 2000. Mart was a barber for 16 years. His barbershops were located in Burton and Davison. Mart and Jane purchased Drake’s Motel from Jane’s parents in 1965. In 1967, Mart along with his brother Barney opened Madden’s Lounge. At that time, the bar only served beer and wine. They went door to door to the citizens of Davison to have them sign a petition so they could sell liquor by the glass. Barney sold his share to Mart in 1971. Mart’s Irish charm, warmth, wit and his dashing blue eyes made him the perfect host. Mart went into retirement in 2003. He was past president of the Genesee County Beverage Association and he held positions on the State and National Level of the Beverage Association. Mart along with 11 friends started the Dirty Dozen Hunting Club in 1957. Going to deer camp in the U.P. was an annual tradition. Mart enjoyed playing sports and loved to talk about them even more. He played baseball in the Flint area during the 1940’s and 50’s. Mart enjoyed playing golf and was a charter member of the Davison Country Club. Mart’s love of bowling started with his first job as a pinsetter at Davison Rollaway Lanes. Over the years, he bowled on many leagues and tournaments in the area and around the country. He sponsored many softball and bowling teams. Mart also known as “The Bomber” was the past president of the Flint Bowling Association and was inducted into the Flint Bowling Hall of Fame in 1984. Because of his generosity to help others and his service to the community, Mart was awarded the Good Scout Award in 1997. Mart as a young boy hitchhiked miles to get food for his family. And as a young man in the Army sent his paycheck home to help his parents. He would not get married until he knew he could provide for “His Bride.” Always, always provided for his children, grandchildren and his willingness to help those less fortunate.

Mart is survived by his children, Lorraine (Dennis) Provost, Marty (Karla) Madden, David Madden, Nancy Madden, Douglas (Patty) Madden all of Davison; grandchildren, Rychelle Madden, Alysia (Rich Root) Madden, Philip (Holly) Provost, Janel Provost, Leslie (David Le) Madden, Allen (Kari) Madden, Alex Lee, Daniel Madden; great-grandchildren, Kailyn, Drake, Martin, Piper, who all knew him as Grandpa Bomber; brothers, Barney, Don (Patsy); sisters, RuthAnn (Dean) Galas, Colleen Eicher; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Debbie; siblings, Juanita, Owana, James, Patrick and Edward.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Kim and Larry Noyce at Melody Gardens and their staff.
