Jim lived an abundant life as a man of God, serving his family and community to the fullest. Born in Flint, Michigan, he grew up in Detroit, and at the age of 9, his family moved to a beautiful farm in Nashville, Michigan. His memories of that time filled his heart with joy and each year, he and his family would visit the farm and community, partly due to his role as the President of the historical Barryville Cemetery Association.
Jim was a 3 letterman in high school and college playing football, track and basketball and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was a gifted athlete and leader, with a quirky and sweet sense of humor! After college graduation from Central Michigan University, he was selected as a high school teacher and coach at Davison High School, a role he cherished. Later, he would become President of the Davison School Board for many years, as well as a member of the Davison Educational Foundation. When new opportunities arose, he became a leader in the real estate world, creating Dowsett Real Estate Company and Dowsett Real Estate School. With 14 offices, he provided employment and opportunities for numerous individuals and families. He was also active at the state level and provided leadership in creating important real estate laws and procedures. He was often called upon to travel around Michigan to teach and train others. Over the years, he taught, encouraged, and mentored hundreds of individuals, who continue telling stories of the important life role model he became to them all. Someone recently called him a leader of leaders.
Although his resume describes a bright and productive leader, the most important aspects of his life were about being a husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and serving God. He was most grateful for and proud of his wife, children, and grandchildren. Jim was a Kiwanian, 60-year member of the Davison Country Club, on the executive Board of Boy Scouts for many years, member, and photographer of the Chamber of Commerce, in Promise Keepers, Bible Study Fellowship, and the Chaplain of Gideons in the Davison camp. Active at First Baptist Church of Davison, he would serve in a variety of roles, and sang in the Choir for many decades. He was widely known for his beautiful and interesting photography and generously donated many pieces for charitable and fundraising events. He was incredibly proud to be a U.S. Marine and loved our country passionately.
Many will mourn his loss, but especially his family: wife of 30 amazing years, Carol L. Dowsett; beloved daughters, Melissa Latner (John) and Tiffany Belford (Ken); son, Jimmy Dee Dowsett (Whitney); sons-in-law, Jim Maxwell and Michael Zappan. His precious grandchildren: Caroline Maxwell, Madeline Newsome (Nick), Taylor Latner, Evan Latner, Maggie Latner, James Dee Dowsett III, Samantha Belford, Morgan Samples (Hogan) and Jacob Belford (Madison); soon to arrive great-grandson, sweet baby Samples; sisters, Mary Jane Lenon (Herb) and Nancy Lutz (Tom); many sweet nieces and nephews. In addition, Jim and Carol have a multitude of cherished friends, many of whom are like family who have loved and supported them for years. Jim knew that his precious daughter, Melinda would greet him at Heaven’s Gate, along with his older brother, John “Jack”, his parents, Don and Emilie Dowsett and other family and friends who departed before him.
Jim’s life was lived fully and richly, with worldwide travel, photography, love of nature (especially birds), cooking, memorable fishing trips that he helped organize and cooked for. The past five years, Jim and Carol have been blessed to spend the winter months in Florida and have made many new, beautiful friendships. On their property in Davison, Jim has planted over 200 trees. In his real estate career, he touched thousands of families and individuals. He always said he went into real estate to help others.
