Gene loved his family. He married Shirly Wheeler in 1956 because he’d fallen in love with her brain, her laugh, and her red hair. He shared a mutual love of music, film, art and travel for their 58 years of marriage. Their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who followed were Gene’s greatest joy. After his family, Gene’s next greatest love in life was laughter. He was always ready with a joke or some good natured teasing. He was a good sport, and loved it almost as much when someone scored a joke on him. He was, as his voice message said, “a delightful guy!” Gene was a graduate of Davison High School. He honorably served in the Army as a radio operator in Korea. He earned his Psychology degree from MSU while working as a telegrapher for the Grand Trunk Western Railroad and began his lifelong career in the Criminal Justice field. Throughout his career, Gene was devoted to reducing crime, protecting communities, and providing opportunities for people to change their lives. He led and served on many initiatives providing support and resources in the areas of substance abuse and addictions. He was committed to improving the criminal justice system through crime prevention strategies such as residential programming, alternative sentencing, crime prevention, and participation in the Big Brother/Big Sisters, YMCA, and many other agencies. His professional accomplishments are truly too many to list but include writing the grant that brought 911 to Genesee County and receiving the 1972 Police Science and Technology Award from the International Chiefs of Police. Gene loved people and life! He golfed, he photographed his family and flowers, he helped care for his grandchildren and he built tree houses. He drove a car into a lake on at least one occasion, he made an excellent bowl of popcorn, and he celebrated talent wherever he found it. He loved to surprise people and he loved to learn something new.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Shirly; parents, Stephen and Helen Wheeler; parents-in-law, Gilbert and Leona Wheeler; his nephew, Anthony Wheeler; grandson, Baby Boy Engel; son-in-law, Richard Donahue; and many good friends. He is survived by his brother, Lyle (Joann) Baldwin; sister, Kathleen Lucas; children, Kimberly Donahue, Teresa (Gregory) Blaine, Eric (Wendy) Baldwin, Lois (Fred) Jeffers, Robin (Darlene) Baldwin, and David Labick; grandchildren, Maria (Amanda) Hawthorne, Megan Donahue (Robert Gerics), Andrew Donahue, Landon Baldwin, Collin Baldwin, Christian Baldwin, Ethan Baldwin, Anthony Smith, Rick (Jordan) Jeffers, and Daniel Jeffers; great-grandchildren, Brisa and Coral Barajas and Ryker Hawthorne. His final years were made more comfortable and joyful by Nurse Teresa Olin and the staff and friends at Brookdale of Davison.
