Walter was born in Thetford Center, MI on July 27, 1923, son of the late Bert and Stella Mae (Wilbur) Ostrander. Walt’s family were farmers and they moved frequently throughout his youth, but later returned to the homestead where he was born near Center and Wilson Roads. He was a graduate of Kearsley High School but spent most of his high school years at Davison. There he met the Minto brothers with whom he would later work from the mid-1950’s until he was 84 years old. He worked construction with Minto Brothers and then helped them build the Davison Country Club which opened in 1962. He worked opening the club house, as greenskeeper in spring and summer, grounds maintenance in fall and winter, and as all-around fixer-upper anytime, repairing nearly anything broken or in disrepair, even after retirement. He was honored in 2012 at the Country Club’s 50th Anniversary. He is remembered as a wonderful, caring husband to wife Mary and dear father to daughter Rebecca (Ostrander) Pettengill and stepson, John David McDermott for whom he always set the example of the value of hard work and not giving up. He will be remembered fondly by grandchildren; Jennifer McDermott Brooks and John Karl McDermott and great-grandchildren, Charlie, Colin and Spencer Brooks and Cooper McDermott. During WWII, Walter had to stay on the farm, however; after the war, his family served their country by donating cattle to be shipped abroad to Belgium. Walt accompanied the animals by train from Davison to Maryland. A sports lover, Walter played softball as a young adult, bowled on the church league and golfed. He learned softball by practicing behind the barn with brother Donald and went on to play in the city softball leagues of the 1940’s and 50’s. He was part of the Herrlich’s team that won the state title and he pitched a no-hitter. Walter met his wife, Mary (Hooth) through a mutual friend and his participation in the Flint softball leagues. Mary and Walter were married in South Bend, IN in April 1949 and lived in the greater Flint area all their lives. Walter was a good bowler and grew to love golf while working at the Davison Country Club. The Ostrander family also loved to play euchre and Walt was part of the DCC Euchre League every winter. He was active in the Presbyterian Church with wife Mary and served by caring for church grounds and doing odd jobs. He cherished his Minto “family,” friends he made and kept since his youth, and new friends made at Abbey Park.
Walter is survived by his daughter, Rebecca (Ostrander) and David Pettengill; grandchildren, Jennifer McDermott-Brooks, John Karl and Cristina McDermott; great-grandchildren, Charlie, Colin and Spencer Brooks and Cooper McDermott. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary; parents, Bert and Stella Mae Ostrander; siblings, Wesley, Marguerite (Derwin), Arthur and Donald Ostrander; stepson, John David McDermott.
