Leona June (Yott) Lakies of Flushing, age 91, died Wednesday, June 13, 2012. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2012 at Rossell Funeral Home, 307 E. Main Street, Flushing with Chaplain Gene Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 1-8:00 p.m. Friday. The family requests memorial contributions to be made to Brian’s House.
Mrs. Lakies was born in Halfway, Michigan, March 29, 1921, the daughter of Roy and Lucy Yott, the second of eight children and has lived in the Flint and Flushing area most of her life. Leona married the love of her life, Bill Lakies on March 28, 1942, and the two were inseparable until his passing on November 30, 2009. The couple were married sixty-seven years.
Family and friends will most remember our mom for her ability to always point out the best in everyone, her infectious smile, her kind generosity and her high fashion for dress.
Her favorite things to do were eating out, throwing a party, vacationing in Central Lake with family, boating, making German Potato Sausage with family (which has since become a family tradition) and last but not least shopping with her daughters and granddaughters and sister-in-law – Gracie. Her favorite story to tell was when she and her husband won a brand new Buick LaCross from Patsy Lou Williamson’s Car Dealer and only got to ride in it once before she had a massive heart attack in 2005. She always enjoyed the car and the story behind the car. A couple of years ago we discovered a wall mural of the old Home Dairy taken in 1942. The mural is at the Starlite Coney Island Restaurant on Center Road. Her picture is life size on the wall and she’s the one wearing the corsage. Her salary in 1942 was $17.00 per week and she remembers getting $1.00 extra per week for being “the best waitress”.
She will be fondly remembered by: her two daughters, Sharon and husband Mike Hennagir, Connie and husband Leroy Smith; grandchildren, Michelle (Rick), Duane, Steve (Monique), Vikki (Harold), Sarah, Krystle (Jerry), Deanne (Gary), Lesha (Terry), Kristen (Andrew) and Jeffery; eleven great-grandchildren, Alicia, Dani, Rachel, Carter, Garrett, Sydney, Hunter, Evalena, Sidney, Jacob and Molly; great-great granddaughter, Payton; two brothers, Hugh and Dale Yott. She leaves many cherished memories for those she came in contact with and especially the wonderful stories about her childhood growing up to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and sweetheart Bill; son, Len; daughter, Valerie; son-in-law, Rocky; her parents; three brothers and two sisters. The Lakies family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at Primrose Assisted Living and to the McLaren Hospice staff and staff of Brian’s House.
