HEMPEL, Rudolph H. -- Age 80, of Holland, formerly of Flint, died August 2, 2011 at Sheldon Meadows in Hudsonville. Funeral services will be 1 PM Friday, August 5 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Pastor John Westra officiating. Interment in Sunset Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-4 and 6-9 PM Thursday. Those desiring may make contributions to the American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society. Mr. Hempel was born December 2, 1930 in East Tawas the son of Harry and Ada (Diment) Hempel. He was a 1948 graduate of Bendle High School. He married Shirley Jean Wilson on November 21, 1948; she preceded him in death December 12, 2005. Mr. Hempel was the 1950 Golden Gloves Welter Weight Champ. He and his daughter Diane were survivors of the 1953 Beecher tornado. He was the 1956 all Events Champ in the Flint City Bowling Tournament. He ran the National Guard Motor Pool for the City of Flint for many years. Mr. Hempel was a retired truckdriver. He was a charter member of the Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Flint, and a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Holland. Mr. Hempel was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He lived a Christian Life. Rudy was an all around Handyman, helping anyone he could. He never had a bad word about anyone. Surviving are: beloved daughter, Diane and husband David Brown of Hudsonville; two grandchildren, Jeffrey Brown and wife Angie of Grand Rapids, Jennifer Brown of Hudsonville; two great-grandsons, Xander and Ian; two brothers, Erich Hempel, Carl Hempel and wife Ernestine; sister-in-law, Eva Hempel; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; infant daughter Ada Louise; brother and sister-in-law, John and Rosa Hempel; and nephew, Bill Hempel.
