ALMASY, Nick Ernest - age 96, died Sunday, January 25, 2015 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11AM Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Thetford United Methodist Church, G-11394 N. Center Rd., Clio. Rev. Karen Williams officiating. Burial will be in Thetford Township Cemetery next to the church with military honors. Visitation will be at the O'Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio on Friday, January 30 from 12-4 and 5-8PM where a Masonic Memorial conducted by the Genesee Chapter #517 will be held at 7PM. There will be visitation at the church on Saturday from 10AM until time of services at 11AM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Thetford United Methodist Church.
Nick was born in Detroit, MI on September 29, 1918, the son of the late Gustav and Anna (Szilagyi) Almasi. He resided in Imlay City as a child and moved to Flint in 1929. Nick began working at Buick Motor Division in 1936 until he was drafted into the army. He poudly served his country during WW II in the Pacific Theatre where he earned and received two purple hearts. On April 27, 1946, he married Irene Sharkady. He was proud of the fact he built his own house in Flint where he and Irene raised their three sons, Nick wa an active member of the Masonic Lodge #517 in Genesee, MI and the United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School for many years. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, turtle trapping, and collecting classic Corvairs. But he is probably best remembered as "The Bee Man." He liked to tell the story of how during the General Motors Sit-down Strike of 1937 he was bringing lucch to his brother and found a swarm of bees which he put into a box and took home to begin the first of many swarms he cultivated in his life, at one time having over 100 swarms in his apiary. He sold the honey for many years and became a mentor to many other beekeepers.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his sons, Nick (Deborah) Almasy, John (Cheryl) Almasy and Clark (Edith) Almasy; 9 grandchildren, Elizabeth Almasy, Renae Almasy, Jason Almasy, Grant Almasy, and Andy Almasy, Nina (Alex) Hidalgo, Roy (Jennifer) Almasy, Carly (Dean) Ryckman and Dale Almasy; 5 great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by: wife, Irene; brothers, Gus Almasy and John Almassy; and a sister, Margaret Hawks.
