ROAT, Charles “Charlie” - Of Swartz Creek, age 79, died Thursday, January 31, 2013 at his residence.

Funeral service will be held at 11am Wednesday, February 6, 2013
at Cornerstone Baptist Church, 6273 Miller Road, Swartz Creek,

Pastor Chris Yager and Aaron Whitman co-officiating.

Burial in Great Lakes National Cemetery.

Visitation 2-4pm and 6-8pm Tuesday at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Mr. Roat will be at the church 10am Wednesday until the time of service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cornerstone Baptist Church Missions.

Charlie was born in Grand Rapids on June 2, 1933, graduated from Bentley High School. In 1953, he joined the United States Air Force. In 1960 he moved to Alaska and spent 30 years at Clear Air Force Station. He married Marjorie (Thomas) Shields on July 1, 1977 in Anderson, Alaska. He was a member of the Alaskan Civil Air Patrol. Charlie was owner/pilot for Royal Alaskan Aviation. Charlie was also Mayor of Anderson, AK and was in the local government for many years. He was the founder of the Anderson Bluegrass Festival. In 1991, he retired and moved to Colorado Springs. In 2005, Charlie returned to Michigan. Charlie was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church and was a lifetime member of the Lions Club International. Charlie loved being with people, loved life and was a great storyteller.

Surviving are wife, Marjorie;

daughter, Susan (Glen) Slater;

step-children, Karen (Carl) Southwood, Kenneth (Michelle) Shields, Kathleen (Roger) Moore;

grandchildren, Amy (Matthew) Shaw, Melissa (James) Patterson;

step-grandchildren, Dylan, Claire, Harper and Cassidy Shields; Tessa, Seth, Kendall and Kennedy Moore;

great-grandchildren, Jonathon and Charles Patterson;

brothers, Tom (Birgit) and Jerry (Jenni) Roat and sisters, Patti (Tom) Conley and Christine Roat;
numerous, nieces, nephews, cousins and his dog, Toklat.
He was preceded in death by son, Robert John Roat, parents, Arthur and Harriet (Eagleson), sisters, Joan Beckwith and Janet Sauvenaugh, brothers, Harold and Robert Roat.
