SMITH, Charles E. “Smitty” – of Flint, age 84, heard his Savior’s call on May 15, 2016. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Saturday, May 21, 2016 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 N. Dayton St., Davison; Rev. Fr. Robert C. Bacik celebrant. Military Honors will be rendered. At Smitty’s request, cremation will follow the Mass. Visitation will be 11 AM – 2 PM and 4-8 PM Friday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison and one hour prior to the Mass on Saturday at the church. A Rosary will be prayed 7 PM Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church Building Fund.
Smitty was born in Prague, AR on July 15, 1931, son of the late William and Rose (Ella Freeman) Smith. He married Paula Zaragoza on October 1, 1952 and she preceded him in death on September 9, 2008. Smitty proudly served his country in Okinawa, Japan with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. His unit received special commendations including, United Nations Service Medal, Occupation Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal and the Korean Service Medal. He worked at GM as a skilled tradesman for 42 years, retiring April 1, 1994. Smitty was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, a member of the VFW, Flint Eagles Aerie # 629 and a former Mason and Shriner. He enjoyed country music and performed with many bands.
Smitty is survived by two daughters, Cheryl (James) Slebodnik, Carla Zaragoza; grandchildren, Daniel Cook, Lisa Beam-Organ, Robert Stiefel, Taunya (Randy) Matteson; great-grandchildren, Tyrek, Cooper, Jacob, Garrett, Andrew, Sabastion, Hannah, Savanna. He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Smith; in-laws, Edwardo and Delfina Zaragoza.
