Gerry Gill Harsch 71 of Traverse City died Thursday, September 16, 2010.
Gerry was born in Traverse City on October 10, 1938 the son of Gerhart and Merla (Gill) Harsch. The family moved to Saginaw where he graduated high school and earned his Eagle Scout. Gerry graduated from Kalamazoo College. He received his Master’s in Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning at Michigan State University, where he was also an Associate Professor. He married Carol Long and they had three children, Chris, Kevin and Amanda; this marriage ended in divorce.
Gerry worked as a Planner for over 45 years, working for the City of Charlevoix and Garfield Township, Traverse City. Gerry started two businesses, Land Planning and Design Associates and recently, Heritage Window Works. Some of his favorite projects involved working with the Mackinaw Island State Parks Commission and the Niagara Escarpment.
Gerry enjoyed big projects, woodworking, and historic window restoration. He was very active in the community working on many historical restoration projects. Gerry was known for finding a historic project and writing a grant for restoration. His sons have fond memories helping their father install the signs at Mission Peninsula Lighthouse. He also enjoyed kayaking, hiking, biking, garden and the outdoors.
Gerry is survived by children, Christopher (Evelyn) Harsch of Alpena, Kevin (Valeri) Harsch of Ann Arbor and Amanda Zehnder of Seattle, his long term companion, Anne Stevenson of Traverse City, grandchildren, Tiffany Mattia, Jason, Seth and Landon Harsch, and Tony and Porter Stevenson, and his sister, Sallie Gardner of Three Rivers.
Gerry is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Sue Trethway.
Gerry’s family has requested memorial contribution to the Grand Traverse Conservation District.
Per Gerry’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Gerry’s life will be held 4pm Saturday, September 25, 2010 at The Village at Grand Traverse Commons, 830 Cottageview Dr, Traverse City.
