MITCHELL, Edward Ashley passed away peacefully and surrounded by loving family on September 19, 2020. He was 91 years old. He was born and raised in Flint, Michigan, attended Central High School and studied at Flint Junior College. He was married for 71 years to his high school sweetheart, Valia. They had three daughters. Edward’s kindness, love and devotion to his family and church were precious and obvious to those who knew him. He had a passion for golf and the arts. He was a truly great man, well-known for his integrity and tireless dedication to serving his hometown.
In 1947, Edward began a 50-year career with the Flint Journal, holding executive positions of Classified Advertising Manager and Director of Advertising. After his retirement in 1992, he was rehired as Assistant to the Publisher to serve the community on behalf of the Flint Journal. He was a board member of the Flint Area Chamber of Commerce for many years, serving as vice-chairman of the executive committee, co-chair of the community development/public relations committee and chairman of the nominations committee. Notably, the FACC awarded him the prestigious C.S. Mott Citizen of the Year Award in 2000. In 2005, he received a Congressional Honor for his extensive work with the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan. Under his leadership as Board Chairman, the Food Bank grew exponentially, won several awards, and became a national model for similar programs.
Additionally, he played a vital role in the success of numerous community organizations, including Mott Community College, Flint Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Whaley Children’s Center, Flint Classroom Support Fund, Young People’s Ballet Theatre, Goodwill Industries, Flint Rotary Club, Flint Lions Club and St. John Vianney Church.
