C.
Donald was born February 20, 1921 in Flint, the son of A. Harold Bergh and Anna (Anderson) Bergh and grew up in Rankin. After attending primary school in Rankin, he graduated from Grand Blanc High School in 1939. He was a stalwart member of the Bobcats football and baseball teams, and was the senior class president. He then attended Michigan State University, and graduated with a degree in Metallurgical Engineering in 1944. He participated in military training while at MSU, and upon graduation immediately was inducted into the US Army, where after further training he embarked for the European Theatre. As field spotter for an artillery battery in the 71st Infantry Division, he participated in combat against German forces in France, Germany, and Austria until the end of the war in 1945.
Following his return from the war, he married Fern Root on June 20, 1948 in Rankin, and then obtained a graduate degree in Process and Metallurgical Engineering from Michigan State University. He then embarked on a career in teaching, first for a short time at Muskegon High School and then as a professor of engineering at General Motors Institute (now Kettering University) He resided with his family in Flushing and was an active member and congregation president of Salem Lutheran Church in Flint, Faculty advisor for Sigma Nu fraternity at GMI, chapter president for the American Society of Metals, and participated in many other athletic, community and charity organizations. He was an avid photographer and documented every family gathering, He loved the outdoors, particularly trout fishing, and his passion for teaching made him a great resource for passing fishing techniques and lore to future generations.
He was a lifelong Spartan fanatic, and was especially thrilled with the 2014 Rose Bowl victory. He was also a passionate Detroit Tiger fan, and could recall the statistics and skills of every player since the 1930s. He loved to attend Tiger games, especially with his grandchildren.
After retirement, he and his wife, Fern, wintered in Bradenton, Florida but remained in the Flint area for the bulk of the year, most recently in Fenton. After her death he remained vigorous and active, playing golf until age 92. He was devoted to his family, and looked forward to every visit, sporting event, and every other opportunity to gather. In addition to his beloved son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren, he was also devoted to his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and all of their children, as well as his many friends and their children, and loved to hear of their growth and successes.
Don's love, faith, passion for life, optimism, and gift for finding the best in everyone will be missed by all who knew him. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, teacher, mentor, and friend and his positive impact will live on and be expressed through the lives of all those that he touched.
