CHANCE, Carol June, 91, of Grand Blanc, formerly of Traverse City, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Friday, December 9, 2011, at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc. Carol was born on June 18, 1920, in Northport, Michigan, daughter of Clarence and Ethel (Calhoun) Blacken. On March 19, 1938, she married Paul and moved to Traverse City, where she lived until 1991 when she moved to Grand Blanc.
She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City and later Our Risen Lord in Burton. Carol was active in her church in Traverse City, especially on the Altar Guild. It was her pride and joy to place huge bouquets of pink and white peonies from her garden on the altar every June. Carol was also a member of the Sons of Norway for many years. Carol loved nature, birds, flowers, trees and the waters of Lake Michigan. Summers in Northern Michigan were spent at the beach with her children, and winter afternoons were for skiing at Hickory Hills. She had beautiful gardens, with roses and flowering shrubbery and trees. She read voraciously and did crossword puzzles as long as her eyesight let her. She was a fierce Scrabble player, playing weekly with her friends Betty and Sue until just before she died.
She is survived by 3 children, Michael Lee Chance, Jon Robert and Sue (Adams) Chance, and Carol Lynn (Chance) and Jim Ashmore, 11 grandchildren, and 22 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. In addition to her parents, Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Paul, her daughter, Denise Andrist, and two grandchildren, Kevin Chance and Mandy Andrist. Carol was the last of the 11 Blacken children. She had 7 brothers and 3 sisters. Also, surviving her are many nieces and nephews. She had great times with her Friday Night Supper Group at Little Joe’s in Grand Blanc and her dear surviving friends, Dorothy Round, Virginia and Jack Hemming, and Joyce Braden.
The last 3 years of her life, Carol was attended by her wonderful caregiver and dear friend, Denise Waatti of Grand Blanc.
Carol was known by her family and friends for her wit, her zingers, and her unfailing love and care for, and dedication to her husband. She was loved by all her family and friends and she will be missed.
In honor of Carol’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City next summer. Memorials may be made to the Arbor Day Foundation Tree’s in Memory Program (www.arborday.org) or the Howell Nature Center (http://howellnaturecenter.org). Condolences may be shared with the family at www.hillfh.com.
