James H. Hart, Sr., age 90 of Durand, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2012 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 7, 2012 at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel. Pastor John Walworth will be officiating with burial to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Vernon. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m.
James was born on June 8, 1921 in Rockingham Twp., North Carolina, the son of Ernest E.W. and Bessie (McCaskill) Hart. On June 15, 1941 he married Mildred Latham in South Carolina and together they raised 5 children. Mrs. Hart later passed on March 21, 1995.
In North Carolina, James was one of the original barbecue-rs to use the vinegar based Lexington Barbecue Sauce. Mr. Hart also had worked in Oak Ridge, TN on the Manhattan Project. Once he moved to Durand, Mr. Hart went to work for Backus Ford, Harrelson Chevrolet and Dean Brothers. He had also worked at Woody's Grill and had owned City Service Gas Station before working for and retiring from the Buick Motor Division of General Motors.
Mr. Hart was a Fireman on the Durand Fire Dept. for 23 years, he was a 32nd Degree Mason with the Durand Masonic Lodge and was a member of the First Congregational Church in Durand since 1949.
Mr. Hart is survived by 3 sons: James H. Hart, Jr. of Bancroft, Jerry (Kathy) Hart of Durand, Walter (Kay) Hart of Columbus, GA; 1 daughter, Sarah Ruggles of Durand; 12 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; 1 brother, Joe (LaVern) Hart; 2 sisters: Lucille (Billie) Russell, Barbara (Bob) Knapp and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; daughter, Yvonne Milton; son, Stanley Ray Hart; 6 brothers: Calvin, Talmadge "Sam", John, Charles, Neal, Lendon "L.E. and 1 sister, Gladys Johnson.
